Most orthodontic treatment happens between roughly 11 and 16, and that is not a coincidence. By then the permanent teeth are in, so we can align the full arch, and the jaws are still growing, which gives us leverage to correct a bite rather than merely camouflage it. Treat a deep bite or a narrow arch during growth and the correction tends to be faster, more stable, and less likely to require compromises later.

Because we are a pediatric practice, we have usually known these patients since they were toddlers, which makes the conversation about wearing elastics or aligners a lot easier than it is with a stranger.
Metal braces. The default for a reason: fully effective on any case, nothing for the patient to remember, and the least expensive route. Colored elastics let your teen own the look.
Ceramic braces. Tooth-colored brackets for teens who care about photos, yearbooks and video. Same control, much lower visibility, slightly higher fee.
Self-ligating braces. No elastic ties means fewer places for plaque to hide and shorter adjustment visits — helpful for a teenager with a packed schedule.
Clear aligners (Angel Aligners). Removable and nearly invisible, ideal for mild to moderate crowding in a teen who is genuinely reliable. We are candid at the consultation: if the trays sit in a backpack, the case stalls. Braces are the better choice for a teen who forgets.
Crowding when the arch is too small for the teeth. Protrusive upper front teeth, which are also the ones most often chipped in sports. Deep bites that wear the lower incisors. Open bites, often tied to earlier thumb or tongue habits. Crossbites that shift the jaw sideways. Impacted or blocked-out canines that need space created and then guiding into position — a problem that gets significantly harder to solve after growth finishes.
Anyone in football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse or martial arts needs a mouthguard over braces; we will fit one. Aligner patients should take trays out for contact sports and use a guard as well. Trumpet and clarinet players adapt within a few weeks. Expect a short adjustment period with speech after aligners or a new expander.
At the end of treatment, retention is the whole ballgame. Our retainer protocol is nightly wear indefinitely, and we would rather set that expectation clearly at age 14 than see the same patient back at 30 with crowded lower incisors — which is the single most common adult case we see.
Braces need brushing after every meal, and white spot lesions from plaque left around brackets are permanent. Elastics only work if worn as prescribed; a case with skipped elastics can add months. Missed appointments push the finish date. We say this directly to the teen, not only the parent, and we give them a specific finish date to aim at — teenagers respond much better to a deadline they own than to a lecture.
How long will my teen be in braces? Most comprehensive cases run 12 to 24 months, depending on the bite and on cooperation with elastics.
Braces or aligners for a 15-year-old? It depends on the case and the person. Heavy crowding, rotations and bite correction favor braces. Mild crowding plus a reliable teenager favors aligners. We will give you a straight recommendation at the consultation.
How often are appointments, and do they miss school? Every six to eight weeks. Most visits are 15 to 30 minutes, and we book early or late slots when we can.
Does insurance cover teen braces? Most plans with orthodontic coverage do, up to a lifetime maximum for dependents. We verify the benefit and provide the monthly payment plan in writing before starting.
What if a bracket breaks or a wire pokes? Call us. Most repairs are quick, and we keep time open for them.
A teenager who feels talked down to stops cooperating, and cooperation is most of orthodontics. Our team explains the plan to the patient in plain terms, shows them their own scan on screen, and tells them exactly what they control: wear time, hygiene and showing up. Parents get the same information, in writing, including the fee, the insurance benefit and the projected finish date.
